Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes was in tears after his side’s 2-0 defeat by Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, a result that extended the club’s winless run to nine matches in all competitions.
Fernandes struggled to contain his emotions as he walked towards the visiting supporters after the final whistle. The latest defeat further intensified Manchester United’s crisis and increased scrutiny on the position of manager Michael Carrick.
Chelsea led through goals from Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer. The first half ended goalless before Rogers broke through the Manchester United defence to open the scoring in the 50th minute.
Palmer doubled Chelsea’s advantage from the penalty spot in the 64th minute after Lisandro Martinez was penalised for a foul.
The result came only six days after Manchester United were beaten 3-0 by Bournemouth. They have taken just seven points from their opening nine Premier League matches.
Fernandes had started that Bournemouth game on the bench after criticising Carrick’s tactical decisions following the 4-1 defeat by Como in the Champions League. He returned to the starting line-up against Chelsea and played the full match.
Carrick played down the focus on the reasons behind Manchester United’s difficult run after the game.
“I will not give you a long speech to explain the situation today, because it will not change anything,” he said. “We have to move forward and win football matches. It is as simple as that.”
The manager said Manchester United could have scored one, two or even three times during the first half, but claimed his players lost concentration after the interval and allowed Chelsea to take control.
Carrick added that the team needed to learn how to manage difficult situations during matches.
Asked about his own future, Carrick said his immediate priority was preparing the players for Tuesday’s Champions League meeting with Roma. He stressed the importance of ending the run without a win.
After the Roma match, Manchester United are due to face Aston Villa at home next Sunday. Carrick attempted to draw attention to the positive aspects of the performance against Chelsea, highlighting the quality of his side’s first-half display and urging the players to build on it.
The fixture information also lists Manchester United’s Champions League match against Roma on 03 November 2026, while Sunderland and Chelsea are listed for a Premier League fixture on 08 November 2026.
