Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s resurgence at Ajax has earned praise from team-mate Tolu Arokodare but the striker admits the goalkeeper’s saves can leave him wanting to “punch” him.
Ter Stegen joined Ajax on loan from Barcelona last summer after his position at the Catalan club became increasingly difficult. Competition from Joan Garcia, combined with the physical problems he had experienced in recent seasons, contributed to the German goalkeeper’s decision to seek a new challenge.
The move to the Netherlands has since helped Ter Stegen rediscover his best form. He has also settled quickly into the Ajax dressing room, where he is highly respected and regularly praised by his team-mates.
Arokodare discussed Ter Stegen’s performances in an interview with Belgian media outlet Het Laatste Nieuws, with his comments reported by Sport.
The Nigeria international said Ter Stegen was an exceptional goalkeeper, although facing him in training could be a source of considerable irritation.
“Ter Stegen drives me crazy during training,” Arokodare said with a laugh. “Sometimes it is extremely frustrating when you see him continue to save so many shots. You feel like punching him.”
Arokodare also highlighted Julian Brandt as one of the players who has impressed him most.
“He is an absolutely incredible player during matches. He leaves you speechless,” Arokodare said. “He knows exactly when to play the ball first time and when to make a run without the ball.”
The striker also spoke warmly about manager Michel and made clear how much he has enjoyed his time at Ajax.
“I love him, I love everything here,” Arokodare said.
He added: “Ajax is like paradise. The training complex is top level, the stadium is fantastic, the fans are amazing and I love the style of play.”
