Barcelona are reassessing their January transfer plans after consecutive defeats by Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid, with defensive reinforcements now being considered a priority.
The club are looking for a centre-back capable of making an immediate impact in the winter window, while also monitoring promising defenders in the European market for longer-term investment. Sporting director Deco is already working on the issue, although head coach Hansi Flick will have the final say.
Barcelona’s summer strategy had focused on rebuilding their attack. Flick wanted players able to add pace, energy and a greater threat in the forward positions, and the club spent heavily on Anthony Gordon while signing Karim Adeyemi as an opportunity in the market. They also pursued Julian Alvarez until the closing stages of the window before eventually bringing in Gabriel Jesus.
The financial effort involved in those moves meant that strengthening at centre-back was ruled out, despite Ronald Araujo’s departure to Liverpool.
The early part of the season has shown Barcelona have enough depth to rotate their midfield and attack, but injuries have left the defence under significant pressure. Andreas Christensen, Jules Kounde, Eric Garcia and now Xavi Espart have all been affected, creating the possibility of a shortage at the heart of the defence.
Deco identified the issue during the summer and held discussions over a possible move for Inter Milan defender Alessandro Bastoni. However, the cost of the deal and doubts over whether he could adapt to Barcelona’s high-risk defensive approach led the club to abandon the idea at the start of the window.
Christensen’s recovery will be one of the factors in Barcelona’s decision. Flick agreed to extend the Denmark defender’s contract by two years because of his ability and professionalism, but renewed fitness problems have kept him out for much of the opening period of the campaign.
Although Christensen’s condition is improving, Barcelona will manage his return carefully and are unlikely to use him continuously until the end of the season. His minutes are expected to be managed through regular rotation.
The club also have very limited room under the salary cap. Barcelona have enough money to register a player, but not the financial capacity to sign one of the highest-profile options. That restricts their choices in a difficult January market, though the club are assessing players who could work both financially and competitively.
A sale could change the situation significantly. Barcelona are willing to listen to offers for players who are not receiving enough playing time, and a departure would give the sporting department greater scope to prioritise an immediate solution.
Any new signing must be good enough to improve the squad and capable of competing for a starting place. Barcelona are also following younger options including Stuttgart defender Finn Jeltsch and Leipzig defender Castello Lukeba, although both would require substantial investment and are more realistic summer projects.
Flick is highly satisfied with Pau Cubarsi and Gerard Martin, but Barcelona currently lack back-up for the pair and both are carrying a heavy workload. Christensen is expected to return in November, while Eric Garcia is being used more often at full-back than in central defence.
Barcelona’s next listed La Liga fixture is against Deportivo Alaves on 31 October 2026. Racing Santander face Real Madrid on 1 November 2026.
