Musab Al-Juwayr has been given fresh hope of returning to the Saudi Arabia squad after sources told the Al-Montasaf programme that reports of further disciplinary sanctions against him were untrue.
The Al-Qadsiah and Saudi Arabia midfielder is expected to be included in the group travelling to Doha for the Saudi Arabia national team’s next training camp, although the final squad will still have to be confirmed officially by the coaching staff.
The latest development follows the controversy surrounding Al-Juwayr’s omission from Saudi Arabia’s squad for the 27th Arabian Gulf Cup in September. He was left out by the technical and administrative staff for disciplinary reasons, prompting speculation that additional action could prevent him from returning to the national team.
Those reports have now been challenged by the sources quoted by Al-Montasaf, who said there were no further punishments imposed on the player.
Fahad Al-Mufarrij, Saudi Arabia’s executive director, previously said Al-Juwayr had been excluded because of repeated disciplinary breaches and a failure to comply with the camp’s internal regulations. He added that the player had received a verbal warning before committing another breach, which led to the decision to remove him from the squad.
No details of the specific incident were disclosed.
Al-Juwayr accepted responsibility for the behaviour that resulted in his exclusion and apologised to the Minister of Sport, the president of the Saudi Arabian Football Federation, the technical and administrative staff, his team-mates and the supporters.
He also said he respected the decision and was determined to learn from the experience, while recognising the standards required of a player representing the national team.
The absence of any confirmed additional sanction could allow Al-Juwayr to rebuild his position with Saudi Arabia. He is regarded as an important midfield option because of his technical ability and his capacity to create chances.
However, his participation in the next camp remains dependent on the official squad announcement. The sources’ indication that he will travel to Doha has not replaced the formal selection process.
The Saudi Arabia squad is expected to clarify Al-Juwayr’s international future, as he attempts to move beyond the events of the 27th Arabian Gulf Cup and re-establish himself in the national team’s plans.
His previous apology and acceptance of the disciplinary decision may help draw a line under the dispute, but his return to competitive involvement will ultimately be determined by the coaching staff’s official choices.
