Newcastle’s January plans leave Ivan Toney future at Al Ahli uncertain

Newcastle United have not opened talks to sign Al Ahli striker Ivan Toney, despite continued reports linking the England international with a move during the January 2027 transfer window.

Toney’s future has come under renewed scrutiny amid speculation that Newcastle are considering a move for the former Brentford forward. However, there has been no official confirmation of negotiations, and the possibility of a transfer remains based on reports rather than an active deal.

Newcastle manager has warned that the club’s business in January will be shaped by financial restrictions, making it difficult for the team to pursue major signings without considering its budget and existing commitments.

Speaking before Newcastle’s match against Everton, the manager said recruitment would have to comply with financial rules. He added that the transfer window was not a “wish list” for the manager and said any potential moves would be discussed with the club’s recruitment team.

Those comments have raised further questions over whether Newcastle could afford to complete a deal for Toney, even if the club were to make its interest formal. The reported difference between the striker’s current salary and Newcastle’s wage structure is regarded as a significant obstacle.

Toney is understood to be earning close to £500,000 a week at Al Ahli, while the reported upper limit for wages at Newcastle is about £150,000 a week. That gap could make it difficult to agree personal terms or structure a transfer that fits within the Premier League club’s financial limitations.

For now, there are no official indications that Toney is close to leaving Al Ahli or moving to Newcastle United. His situation is likely to depend on whether concrete interest develops and whether the financial conditions for a deal can be met.

Until reliable information emerges about negotiations, reports of a potential departure remain speculation rather than evidence of an agreed transfer.
