Mossos d’Esquadra, the Catalan regional police force, have identified the person accused of targeting Real Madrid midfielder Eduardo Camavinga during the latest Clasico at Camp Nou.
The supporter allegedly threw an object and attempted to attack Camavinga and several Real Madrid players as they celebrated their side’s second goal last Sunday. The incident briefly halted play and prompted widespread condemnation.
Police sources told Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo that a formal complaint has been filed against the suspect under Spain’s sports law. Barcelona have also been officially notified of the case.
The supporter could receive an administrative fine of up to 60,000 euros and be banned from attending sporting events at venues across Spain for between six months and two years.
Under the sports law, an offence classified as “serious” carries a fine of between 3,000 and 60,000 euros. If it is deemed “very serious”, the penalty rises to between 60,001 and 650,000 euros, while a stadium ban of up to five years can also be imposed.
Because none of the players were injured, the incident is expected to be treated as a serious offence.
Spanish football authorities open investigation
The case has also moved beyond the police investigation. La Liga has reported the incident to the disciplinary committee of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), which has opened an official inquiry.
That process could result in disciplinary action against Barcelona as well as the individual supporter.
Barcelona’s security department provided full and effective co-operation to the police, playing a decisive role in establishing the suspect’s identity. He was found to be a member of one of the supporter groups based in the well-known Grada 1957 stand.
The Catalan club has said it will refer the supporter’s case to its own internal disciplinary committee. Possible sanctions include the withdrawal of his membership and a permanent ban from entering Camp Nou.
Barcelona’s decision underlines its position that behaviour damaging to the club’s image will not be tolerated.
