Carles Martinez hails Edmond Tapsoba’s leadership after Leverkusen comeback win

Bayer Leverkusen coach Carles Martinez has praised Edmond Tapsoba for his leadership and decisive contribution after the defender scored twice in the Werkself’s 5-2 comeback victory over FC Nurnberg in the DFB-Pokal.

Leverkusen recovered from a two-goal deficit to secure their place in the last 16, with Tapsoba playing a crucial role in turning the contest around at the BayArena on Wednesday night.

The Burkina Faso international reduced the deficit in the 41st minute before equalising shortly after the restart, scoring both goals from corner situations to inspire his teammates.

Martinez was particularly impressed by the 27-year-old’s ability to take responsibility during a difficult period in the match.

“For me, he is our player who acts like a barometer of the team’s mood,” the Leverkusen coach explained.

The Spaniard highlighted Tapsoba’s leadership qualities, defensive commitment and ability to make the right decisions in possession, describing him as an important figure within the squad.

“He understands when to receive the ball, when to play it long and when he needs to be combative. That is the key for me,” Martínez added.

The coach also emphasised the defender’s technical ability, insisting that his quality on the ball was never in doubt. However, he believes Tapsoba’s willingness to combine those qualities with hard work makes him particularly valuable to the team.

“Everyone knows his quality. With the ball, he is incredible.”

Tapsoba’s performance was also praised by Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes, who highlighted the captain’s influence in keeping the team together after Nürnberg threatened to cause an upset.

The defender will now turn his attention to Saturday’s Bundesliga meeting with VfB Stuttgart, where Leverkusen will hope to build on their cup comeback and deliver another strong performance.
