Moroccan international Chams-Eddine Talbi scored the opening goal as Sunderland secured a thrilling 3-2 victory over Brentford on Wednesday evening to book their place in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup.

Talbi proved influential in the last-16 encounter, finding the net in the 26th minute to set Sunderland on their way to victory and help the Black Cats reach the last eight of the competition.

Despite Brentford making the brighter start, Sunderland took the lead when Talbi finished from close range following a pass from teammate Joslin Ta Bi.

The hosts quickly capitalised on their momentum, doubling their advantage just three minutes later through Timur Tutierov, who was once again set up by Ta Bi.

Sunderland continued to threaten going forward, and Ta Bi completed an impressive hat-trick of assists in the 39th minute when his cross found Malick Fofana, who headed home to make it 3-0.

Brentford responded before the interval, with Callum Wilson reducing the deficit in the 42nd minute to give the visitors renewed hope after Sunderland’s explosive spell in front of goal.

The contest remained tense in the closing stages as Brentford pushed to complete a comeback. Brazilian forward Igor Thiago scored in the fourth minute of stoppage time to make it 3-2, setting up a nervy finish for the home side.

However, Sunderland held firm to protect their advantage and secure progression to the quarter-finals.

The victory marks a significant achievement for Sunderland, who have reached the last eight of the English League Cup for the first time since 2022.

For Talbi, the goal represents another important contribution as he continues to make his mark in English football. The Moroccan winger’s clinical finish gave Sunderland the breakthrough they needed in a fiercely contested cup tie.

With a place in the quarter-finals secured, Sunderland will now turn their attention to the next stage of the competition, while Talbi will hope to build on his performance and continue contributing to the team’s attacking efforts.
