Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal has offered his support to the families of those killed and injured in the Orda train disaster, which has also affected Spanish football.
The crash, which happened on the morning before Wednesday’s fixtures, caused shock across the country. In a mark of respect for the victims, all Copa del Rey matches scheduled for Wednesday were postponed.
A number of footballers expressed their condolences, including Yamal, who shared a message on Instagram.
“My solidarity and support to all the families of the victims and those affected by the Orda tragedy… all the support and strength to everyone,” the Barcelona player wrote.
Yamal accompanied the message with a heart symbol.
The collision involved two high-speed trains and left dozens of people dead or injured. Two carriages from the trains fell down a slope as a result of the impact.
More than 540 people were travelling on the two trains. The crash is regarded as one of the worst accidents in the history of Spain’s modern railway system.
The tragedy’s impact extended beyond the railway network, with football players joining the wider expressions of sympathy for the victims and their families.
