Orlando Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou says his team must quickly correct its weaknesses after confirming that Wednesday’s training schedule will focus on analysing their performance ahead of Saturday’s Soweto Derby against Kaizer Chiefs.
The Buccaneers go into the eagerly awaited fixture with confidence after recording two convincing victories in the space of five days. They defeated African Stars 4-0 on Friday to reach the group stages of the CAF Champions League before beating Milford FC 3-0 in the Carling Knockout Cup on Tuesday evening.
With the derby approaching, Ouaddou said there would be no time for his technical team or players to delay work on the areas that need improvement.
Speaking to journalists after the win over Milford FC, the Pirates coach said Wednesday’s session would involve a detailed review of the team’s display. The analysis would consider both the positive aspects of the performance and the problems that need to be addressed before the meeting with Chiefs.
“Tomorrow (Wednesday) we make analysis. We show the things that we did well and the things that we can improve. And we need to improve them quickly,” Ouaddou said.
“We don’t have time in football. If I’m waiting until December to improve these things, maybe it’s too late.”
The Moroccan-born coach also placed emphasis on the attitude and discipline required from players representing a club with Pirates’ history and status.
For Ouaddou, tactical preparation is only one part of building a successful team. He said players must understand the significance of the badge and shirt they wear, as well as the responsibility of representing a club regarded as one of the biggest in Africa.
“But for me, what is important is the behaviour. The behaviour, the values are the foundation of all projects,” he explained.
“If we don’t have values, pride is very important. Respect – Respect the badge. Respect the shirt. Respect the club. Huge club in Africa.
“If we don’t have this pride, how can you compete at a high level?”
Saturday’s encounter will bring the added pressure and expectations associated with the Soweto Derby, presenting another major test for Pirates as they continue their campaign across domestic and continental competitions.
Ouaddou said he understood the scrutiny that comes with managing a major club, but insisted that the players must also earn the right to represent Pirates.
“You have to deserve to play for a big club. You have to deserve. It’s not easy to play for a big club,” he added.
