South Africa’s Under-15 boys suffered a 2-1 defeat by Portugal in the last 16 of the FIFA U-15 Boys World Cup and Festival in Baku, Azerbaijan, leaving them to face the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in their next match as they continue competing for final tournament positions.

The defeat on Wednesday ended South Africa’s hopes of progressing through the Tier B round, but the tournament format ensures their campaign will continue, with the team now preparing for a quarter-final play-off against the UAE.

Coach Selekedi’s side will meet the UAE at 08:15 South African time in a contest that will determine which team advances to the semi-finals of the play-offs for positions 41 to 48.

The UAE also suffered a narrow defeat in their previous match, losing 3-2 to Iran.

That result means Iran will face Portugal, while South Africa and the UAE must regroup before their meeting.

South Africa turn attention to UAE after Portugal setback

The South African team will be looking to respond positively after their loss to Portugal, having produced an impressive attacking performance earlier on Wednesday.

They defeated Malaysia 6-2 to secure their place in the encounter with the Portuguese side.

However, they were unable to maintain that momentum in the Round of 16, suffering a second 1-2 defeat to Portugal during the tournament.

Despite the setback, South Africa have recorded several encouraging results during their campaign in Azerbaijan, including convincing victories over Maldives, Anguilla and Malaysia.

Their performance against Anguilla was particularly impressive, with the team scoring 13 goals in an emphatic 13-1 win.

They also opened their list of victories with an 8-0 triumph over Maldives before edging France 3-2.

South Africa have played seven matches in the competition so far, winning four, drawing one and losing two.

Their only draw came against Estonia in a goalless encounter, while their defeats have been against Kosovo and Portugal, both by 2-1 scorelines.

Tournament format guarantees more matches

The tournament’s structure means that teams continue playing even after defeats, with fixtures determining their final positions rather than ending their participation following elimination.

Following the quarter-final play-offs, the winner and loser of the South Africa-UAE match will face the corresponding winner and loser from the meeting between Ivory Coast and South Sudan.

The results will determine the positions each team competes for in the semi-finals, giving South Africa another opportunity to test themselves against international opposition.

For Selekedi’s players, the immediate challenge will be to recover from the Portugal defeat and deliver a stronger performance against the UAE.

FIFA tournament focuses on youth development

The FIFA U-15 Boys World Cup and Festival was established to provide young footballers with opportunities to compete internationally against opponents from different footballing backgrounds.

According to FIFA, the competition is designed to give players from member associations with limited international opportunities meaningful matches against different styles of play and football cultures.

The initiative also seeks to encourage national football associations to maintain their investment in youth development by providing young players with valuable competitive experience.

The 2026 tournament is the inaugural edition of the event and features boys’ teams.

A girls’ edition is scheduled for 2027, while separate competitions for boys and girls are planned from 2028.

South Africa will now aim to build on the positive moments from their campaign as they prepare for the UAE, knowing that another opportunity awaits them in the tournament’s placement play-offs.
