Mamelodi Sundowns secured their place in the Carling Knockout Cup quarter-finals with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Marumo Gallants at Loftus Versfeld on Tuesday night, thanks to Siyanda Ndlovu’s decisive first-half goal.

The Pretoria-based side had to withstand sustained pressure from the visitors but held on to their narrow advantage to book a place in the next round.

Despite creating opportunities to extend their lead after the break, Sundowns were unable to add to their tally, leaving Ndlovu’s strike as the difference between the teams.

Ndlovu breaks the deadlock for Sundowns

The match began cautiously, with neither side able to create clear-cut opportunities during the opening stages.

The tempo gradually increased after the 15-minute mark as both teams began to look for a breakthrough.

Gallants registered their first notable effort in the 19th minute when they tested Sundowns goalkeeper Ricardo Goss with a shot from outside the penalty area. Goss dealt with the attempt comfortably, keeping the visitors at bay.

Sundowns responded almost immediately, producing a move that began with their goalkeeper and ended with the opening goal a minute later.

A well-constructed attack from the right flank delivered the ball to Ndlovu, who found the net from a tight angle.

The finish gave the hosts the lead and rewarded their quick transition from defence into attack.

Gallants nearly restored parity before the half-hour mark when they managed to penetrate the Sundowns penalty area.

However, Malibongwe Khoza intervened with a timely sliding tackle to prevent the visitors from converting the opportunity.

The visitors continued to put pressure on the Sundowns defence as they searched for an equaliser, but the hosts maintained their advantage until half-time.

Gallants threaten as Sundowns miss chances

Sundowns began the second half with greater urgency, threatening the Gallants defence within the opening three minutes.

Iqraam Rayners found himself in a promising position in front of goal, but the visitors managed to dispossess him before he could get his shot away.

Gallants then created a dangerous opportunity in the 54th minute through an attack down the left flank.

A cross was delivered into the penalty area, but Khoza again proved decisive, clearing the danger before a visiting player could make contact with the ball.

Two minutes later, Rayners came close to doubling Sundowns’ advantage.

The striker attempted to capitalise on an opening, but the Gallants goalkeeper advanced quickly to deny him.

Rayners recovered the rebound, only for his follow-up effort to be blocked.

The visitors immediately pushed forward in response, testing Goss from the left side.

The Sundowns goalkeeper reacted well, coming off his line to punch the ball away with his right hand and preserve his team’s lead.

Ndlovu’s goal proves enough to seal progression

As the contest entered its closing stages, Sundowns continued to search for a second goal that would have provided greater security.

With 10 minutes remaining, Rayners attempted to drive into the penalty area after dribbling past defenders.

However, his progress was halted when a Gallants defender dispossessed him near the left side of the box.

Despite their efforts to increase the margin, Sundowns could not find another goal in the second half.

Gallants, meanwhile, were unable to convert their opportunities into an equaliser.

Ndlovu’s first-half finish ultimately proved decisive, allowing the Brazilians to protect their advantage and secure a 1-0 victory.

The result confirms Sundowns’ progression to the Carling Knockout Cup quarter-finals, while Gallants are left to reflect on a performance in which they created opportunities but could not find a way past Goss.

Sundowns will now turn their attention to the next stage of the competition as they continue their pursuit of the Carling Knockout Cup trophy.
