De Jong’s El Clasico cameo opens new route back into Barcelona’s starting XI

Frenkie de Jong has been handed a potential new route back into Barcelona’s starting XI after returning from a serious knee injury in Sunday’s El Clasico against Real Madrid.

The 29-year-old Netherlands international came on as a substitute for Fermin Lopez and played the final 16 minutes. Although he was deployed as an attacking midfielder, a role he does not normally occupy, De Jong produced a strong performance on his return.

He suffered a tear to the medial collateral ligament in his right knee while playing for the Netherlands at the 2026 World Cup. Barcelona coach Hansi Flick included him in the squad for the La Liga match against Real Betis and the Champions League fixture against Paris Saint-Germain, but De Jong remained an unused substitute in both games.

His appearance against Real Madrid was his first opportunity to play since recovering from the injury, and Flick said the midfielder had shown in training that he was ready to contribute.

“He has trained very well and gives us a great deal of strength with the ball,” said Flick. “It was extremely important for us that he played a few minutes.”

De Jong has made clear that he does not intend to accept a prolonged spell outside Barcelona’s plans. Speaking to Dutch broadcaster Ziggo Sport several days before the derby, he said he hoped his return would lead to a greater role.

“I have never sat on the bench for such a long time, and I hope I do not have to this season,” De Jong said. “I am now fully fit and getting stronger every day. I hope to get more playing time soon.”

He added: “I understand that my return has to be gradual, but my long-term goal is to play regularly and return to the starting line-up as soon as possible.”

The former Ajax player recognises the intense competition for the two deeper midfield positions in Flick’s double-pivot system, but is not intimidated by the challenge and remains confident in his ability.

Pedri and Rodri are currently Flick’s preferred options in those roles, while Gavi and Marc Bernal are also competing for places in central midfield.

However, De Jong’s use in a more advanced position could provide another opportunity to secure regular minutes. That role is currently occupied by Fermin Lopez and has become less settled following Dani Olmo’s injury.

Barcelona face Deportivo Alaves in La Liga on 31 October 2026, while Real Madrid play Racing Santander in the same competition on 01 November 2026.
