Xavi Espart sets sights on Barcelona return after derby setback

Barcelona teenager Xavi Espart says his priority is to return to action as quickly as possible after suffering an ankle ligament injury in Sunday’s El Clasico against Real Madrid.

The 19-year-old is expected to be sidelined for around seven weeks after damaging ligaments in his right ankle during a challenge involving Real Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni. Espart was unable to continue because of the pain.

His absence is a significant setback for Barcelona manager Hansi Flick, who had placed considerable trust in the young player, according to Catalan newspaper Mundo Deportivo.

Espart has now used social media to share a message of determination while he continues his rehabilitation. He also expressed his disappointment at Barcelona’s 2-1 defeat by Real Madrid and promised to work hard to help the team again as soon as possible.

“I’m hurt by the defeat and I’m only thinking about one thing: returning as quickly as possible. They will not be able to beat us. Forca Barca!” Espart wrote on his Instagram account, alongside two photographs from the match.

Before the injury, Espart had made nine appearances for Barcelona at the start of this season. He scored two goals and provided two assists, performances which helped him establish himself as a regular option in the team.

The teenager had featured at both right-back and left-back, giving Flick added flexibility in defence. His enforced absence will therefore affect Barcelona’s options in the coming fixtures.

Barcelona are listed to face Deportivo Alaves in La Liga on 31 October 2026. Racing de Santander are also listed in the schedule, while Real Madrid are due to play in La Liga on 1 November 2026.

Espart’s recovery will now continue away from the pitch as he waits for further progress before he can resume playing. His public message made clear that, despite the length of the lay-off and the disappointment of the El Clasico result, his focus remains on returning to Barcelona’s squad.
