Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has praised Ronald Araujo, saying the Uruguay defender has provided the aggression, defensive quality and character the team needed.
Araujo joined Liverpool from Barcelona on loan during last summer’s transfer window and has established himself as a regular in Andoni Iraola’s side.
The 2-0 victory over Brighton further underlined his growing influence. Starting at right-back, Araujo delivered a strong defensive display and won all five of the individual duels he contested during the match.
“ Araujo was aggressive at the right moments, exactly when we needed it, and that is what we need,” Van Dijk said.
“You can see it from the stands. The fans love him, and that energy is transferred to the team.”
Van Dijk also said Araujo had settled quickly among his new team-mates since arriving at Anfield.
“We welcomed him with open arms. We can see his defensive qualities, his presence and his positive mentality,” the Liverpool captain added.
“He does not speak much English yet, but he is working on improving that.”
Van Dijk believes Araujo’s contribution extends beyond his performances on the pitch, with the defender’s personality also making an impression within the squad.
“His quality is clear to everyone. He has adapted very well to our defensive line, he has a strong character and we are happy to have him with us,” he said.
The move to Liverpool has given Araujo an opportunity to rebuild his reputation after his physical strength, combative approach and defensive commitment won him growing approval from the club’s supporters.
He is at Liverpool on loan from Barcelona, with the English club holding an option to make the transfer permanent for 55m euros.
As Araujo continues to perform consistently, that clause is becoming increasingly significant. He has secured his place in Iraola’s defence and received the backing of Van Dijk, regarded as one of the world’s leading defenders.
Barcelona’s management are monitoring the player’s progress, with the possibility that his loan could become a permanent move at the end of the season.
