Barcelona held by Real Madrid after Raphinha cancels out Mbappe opener

Barcelona were held to a 1-1 draw by Real Madrid in a lively La Liga encounter, with Raphinha equalising after Kylian Mbappe had put Madrid ahead.

The opening stages were dominated by Barcelona possession, as they attempted to move the ball through a series of short passes in the Real Madrid half. Their best early opportunity came from a corner taken by Joao Cancelo, which Gerard Martin met with a powerful header. Andriy Lunin produced an excellent save on the goal-line to keep Real Madrid level.

Lamine Yamal also went close after receiving the ball inside the area, although his effort was blocked and went behind for a corner. At the other end, Arda Guler tested the goalkeeper with a fierce strike from the edge of the box after being given room to shoot.

Barcelona continued to control the ball, recording 63% possession during one spell and 59% overall in the first half. Their pressure eventually produced the opening goal. Pedri exchanged a short pass with Raphinha inside the area, allowing the Barcelona forward to beat his marker before placing a precise finish inside the right-hand post.

Real Madrid responded with sustained pressure, while Barcelona’s defensive organisation prevented several attacks from developing. Guler saw another effort deflected behind, and his corner deliveries were dealt with by the Barcelona defence. Jude Bellingham tried to create an opening with an individual run, but was stopped before he could shoot.

The match was interrupted by injuries to Real Madrid’s Yan Diomande and Barcelona’s Xavi Espart. There was also a forced substitution for Barcelona, while a first change was made by Real Madrid earlier in the contest.

Real Madrid improved after the interval and levelled through Mbappe. Diomande sent a low pass into the area from the left, and Gerard Martin attempted to clear. The ball struck Mbappe and deflected into the net, with the goal subsequently recorded as Real Madrid’s equaliser through the France forward.

Mbappe later missed a good chance to complete the comeback, sending an effort over the crossbar from inside the penalty area. Diomande also ran through on goal but sent a low shot narrowly wide of the right post.

Barcelona had opportunities to regain the lead. Lamine Yamal missed from close range after a mistake in the Real Madrid defence, while Anthony Gordon forced Lunin to save a shot aimed towards the right side of the goal. Raphinha also sent an effort just wide of the left post and fired over from the edge of the area.

Real Madrid threatened through Guler, who saw a powerful shot saved before the defence cleared the rebound, and through Mbappe, who was denied by a timely challenge from Pau Cubarsi. Joao Cancelo also made an important defensive intervention to stop Mbappe on the right.

Barcelona finished with 56% possession to Real Madrid’s 44%. The recorded shot counts were 12-7 in Barcelona’s favour during one phase, followed later by 8-5 and 5-2 figures, as both sides continued to search for a winner. The referee added two minutes of stoppage time, but neither team could find a second goal.
