Kaizer Chiefs’ troubled start to the season continued as they were eliminated from the CAF Confederation Cup by Red Arrows after losing 3-2 on penalties in the second preliminary round.
Chiefs won the second leg 1-0 at Moses Mabhida Stadium, but Bradley Cross’s second-half header only cancelled out Red Arrows’ first-leg advantage. The Zambian side had won the opening match by the same scoreline.
Red Arrows held their nerve from the spot to secure a place in the group stage and condemn the South African club to an early exit from continental competition.
Chiefs had to overturn a deficit created by Alassane Diarra’s winner in Zambia, and coach Fernando da Cruz’s side dominated possession in front of their home supporters as they searched for a way back into the tie.
The hosts created their first clear opportunity in the 11th minute, when Thulani Mabaso tested the Red Arrows goalkeeper with a powerful strike.
Pule Mmodi then headed wide at the far post from a promising position, while Wandile Duba could not finish after breaking through on goal.
Red Arrows maintained a disciplined defensive shape, absorbing the pressure and looking for chances on the counterattack as Chiefs struggled to turn their territorial control into a goal.
Da Cruz brought on Mfundo Vilakazi before the hour mark in an effort to increase the attacking threat. The change soon paid off when Vilakazi delivered a free-kick for Cross to meet with a header in the 65th minute.
The goal levelled the tie on aggregate and gave Chiefs renewed momentum. They continued to push for the second goal that would have taken them through without a shootout.
Substitute Ethan Chislett helped create an opening for Mduduzi Shabalala, but the midfielder’s attempt went straight at the goalkeeper. Chislett was involved again when he set up Velebayi, who fired over the crossbar.
Red Arrows responded by sending on Ricky Banda and Norris Kalamba as they attempted to regain control and withstand the sustained pressure.
Chiefs were unable to find the decisive goal before the final whistle, leaving the aggregate score level and sending the contest to penalties.
Red Arrows eventually won 3-2 from the spot, completing one of the notable results of the Second Preliminary Round and earning their place among the 16 clubs competing in the group stage.
The result ends Chiefs’ continental campaign despite an improved display in the return fixture.
Red Arrows will now advance to the CAF Confederation Cup group stage, which is scheduled to begin in November.
