Orlando Pirates cruise past African Stars into CAF Champions League group stage

Orlando Pirates reached the CAF Champions League group stage with a 3-0 win over African Stars at Orlando Amstel Arena on Friday, completing a 4-0 aggregate victory.

The Buccaneers carried a narrow 1-0 advantage into the second leg after winning the first meeting, but quickly asserted their authority in front of their home support.

Thapelo Mokobodi opened the scoring after 18 minutes, arriving at the back post to slide the ball into an unguarded net. Simphiwe Masilela played a key role in the build-up as Pirates increased their overall lead and took control of the tie.

African Stars, the Namibian champions, struggled to cope with the hosts’ attacking threat. Pirates doubled their advantage on the night just before half-time when Evidence Makgopa scored in the 44th minute.

It was Makgopa’s first start since returning to the team, and his goal left African Stars facing a difficult task after the interval. Pirates led 2-0 on the night and 3-0 on aggregate at the break.

Head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou made an early change in the second half, introducing young forward Mpho Padime. The substitute made an immediate impact, scoring within the opening minute after the restart.

Padime’s goal established a 3-0 lead for Pirates on the night and put the outcome beyond doubt, with the aggregate score stated as 4-0. Makgopa was then credited with adding another goal in the 77th minute to complete his brace and provide further gloss to a commanding performance, although the match result was recorded as a 3-0 victory.

The early second-half strike and the late contribution underlined Pirates’ control as African Stars were unable to find a response capable of reviving their continental campaign.

The result fulfils an important objective for Pirates following the disappointment of last season’s continental campaign. Ouaddou had emphasised the importance of taking the Soweto club back into the Champions League group stage and described the Buccaneers as a giant of African football.

Pirates’ performance across the two legs now gives them the opportunity to compete against the leading clubs on the continent. African Stars had travelled to Johannesburg determined not to be overawed, but the hosts’ attacking quality and control ultimately proved decisive.

Pirates will next switch their attention to domestic competition. They face Milford FC in the Carling Knockout Cup on Tuesday as they continue their pursuit of silverware on multiple fronts.
