Yehvann Diouf redeems himself with last-gasp penalty save in Nice victory over Brest
Yehvann Diouf experienced a remarkable turnaround as OGC Nice secured a dramatic 2-1 victory over Stade Brestois in Friday’s Ligue 1 encounter, with the goalkeeper saving a stoppage-time penalty after making a costly error earlier in the match.
The Senegalese shot-stopper endured a difficult opening period at the Stade Francis-Le Blé, gifting Brest the lead in the 15th minute. Diouf hesitated while attempting to play the ball out from the back, allowing Ludovic Ajorque to dispossess him before calmly finishing into an unguarded net.
The mistake threatened to overshadow Diouf’s performance, but the goalkeeper responded with determination as Nice fought their way back into the contest.
Elye Wahi restored parity in the 61st minute, finishing from a corner delivered by Mohamed Amoura. Sofiane Diop then completed the comeback in the 83rd minute, capitalising on a defensive mistake to fire Nice into the lead.
Brest were handed a late opportunity to rescue a point after a VAR review resulted in a penalty during stoppage time.
Kenny Lala stepped forward to take responsibility, but Diouf produced an excellent save, diving to his right to keep out the effort and preserve Nice’s 2-1 advantage.
The save sparked jubilant celebrations among Nice’s players, who immediately surrounded their goalkeeper at the final whistle.
After his costly first-half error, the late intervention proved decisive in securing all three points for the visitors.
The victory also gave Nice their first away win of the Ligue 1 season, lifting them provisionally to eighth place with 11 points, while Brest remained on nine points.
For Diouf, the night offered a powerful reminder of the resilience required of a goalkeeper. Having endured a difficult evening, he ultimately became one of the principal figures in Nice’s comeback victory, ensuring his earlier mistake did not define the result.
