Mofokeng attracts Lille and Leverkusen interest after rapid Union SG start

Relebohile Mofokeng could face a major career decision in January 2027, with Lille and Bayer Leverkusen reportedly monitoring the South Africa international at Royale Union Saint-Gilloise.

Turkish global transfers reporter Ekrem Konur says the two clubs are considering offers of about €15 million (approximately R276 million) for the 21-year-old winger.

Mofokeng joined Union SG from Orlando Pirates for a reported €3.5 million in July 2026 and has made an immediate impact in Europe. He has scored six goals and provided two assists in 14 appearances for club and country.

His performances have also attracted attention from Atletico Madrid, Chelsea, Brighton and Napoli, who have reportedly discussed the player internally.

Mofokeng made his competitive debut for Union SG as a substitute against Club Brugge in the Belgian Super Cup on 31 July. He converted the decisive penalty in the shootout.

He then scored on his Belgian Pro League debut against K.V.C. Westerlo on 8 August. A further notable display came in Union SG’s 2-0 win over Royal Antwerp.

The winger has also featured in the UEFA Europa League, scoring during a 3-0 victory against Viktoria Plzen on 17 September. On Sunday, he supplied an assist in a 3-0 Belgian Cup win over KFC Nijlen, strengthening his case for a regular starting place under coach David Hubert.

Mofokeng is under contract at Union SG until 30 June 2030, with an option to extend for another year. That agreement gives the club time to develop him and could allow the player to continue adapting to European football without the immediate demands of one of the continent’s biggest leagues.

A full season in Belgium, including regular first-team football and European competition, could also increase his value beyond the current €15 million estimates. Union SG and Hubert’s approach to young players may offer Mofokeng the opportunity to improve his tactical understanding and physical preparation before a possible move to the Premier League, Bundesliga or Ligue 1.

Percy Tau’s spell with Club Brugge is cited as a reminder that ability alone does not guarantee a successful move without sufficient time for development.

However, Mofokeng’s start has raised the possibility that he may already be prepared for a higher level. His goals and assists have come during his first 14 appearances, while his calmness in the Belgian Super Cup shootout pointed to a maturity beyond his years.

A move from Orlando Pirates to Union SG and then to one of Europe’s top-five leagues within 12 months would be an unprecedented route for a South African player. At 21, though, Mofokeng would still have time to adjust at a bigger club, particularly one prepared to develop rather than demand an immediate leading role.

Bayer Leverkusen have a reputation for developing young players within a successful team, while Lille have a record of identifying and refining African talent.

A €15 million January transfer would bring a significant profit for Union SG and increase Mofokeng’s earning potential. For the player, who grew up in Sharpeville, a lucrative contract could provide important financial security for his family.

Union SG are likely to resist losing the winger during the season, especially while their European campaign continues. Mofokeng and his family must weigh sporting ambition, financial security and long-term development before deciding whether to remain in Belgium or take the next step immediately.
