Bundesliga side 1. FC Köln are reportedly planning to strengthen their squad during the January transfer window, with former Germany international Lukas Nmecha emerging as a potential attacking target.

According to German newspaper Bild, the club expects to make at least two signings in the winter as they look to address squad shortages following the opening six matchdays of the Bundesliga season.

Köln are particularly keen to reinforce their attack, with Nmecha among the players being considered as his contract with Leeds United approaches its expiry.

However, competition from other Bundesliga clubs and the financial demands of a potential deal could complicate Köln’s pursuit.

Köln focus on winter reinforcements

Despite dealing with several absences, Köln are reportedly unwilling to make short-term signings of unattached players.

Instead, sporting director Thomas Kessler is focusing on the January transfer window, when the club hopes to bring in reinforcements for the remainder of the campaign.

According to Bild, at least two new arrivals are expected, with attacking options a particular priority.

Lukas Nmecha emerges as a possible target

Nmecha is reportedly among the candidates Köln could consider as they look to strengthen their forward line.

The former Germany international has not made as many appearances in the Premier League as hoped, while his contract situation at Leeds United could make him an option for the winter window.

However, Köln are not the only Bundesliga club expected to show interest in the player.

The financial demands involved could also present a challenge for the club as they assess their options.

Midfield concerns could prompt another signing

Köln are also monitoring their midfield situation, where further absences could leave the squad short of options.

Tom Krauß has impressed in a defensive midfield role, but the club could struggle to maintain depth if another player becomes unavailable.

There are also concerns over the timeline for Ellyes Skhiri’s return. If it becomes clear in December that his recovery will take longer than expected, Köln could consider adding another midfielder in January.

The club’s winter recruitment plans will therefore depend on both its attacking needs and the availability of its current midfield options.
