Cristiano Ronaldo has been suspended for 30 days and fined €255 by the Portuguese Football Federation after leaving Portugal’s training camp.
The Al-Nassr forward, who captains the national team, has already served 19 days of the suspension. Only 11 days remain, meaning he will be available for Portugal’s next international break.
Portugal are due to face Denmark and Wales in the Nations League during that period.
The disciplinary action follows a dispute between Ronaldo and Portugal manager Jorge Jesus during the team’s latest Nations League campaign.
Ronaldo left camp after being left out
Ronaldo was included in Jesus’ first squad for four Nations League matches and started Portugal’s opening fixture against Wales.
However, he was an unused substitute for the second match, against Norway. Jesus subsequently said the circumstances of the game had led to Ronaldo not playing.
After the president of the Portuguese Football Federation held an urgent meeting with Ronaldo and Jesus, the captain left the national team’s training camp.
Rafael Leao wore Portugal’s number seven shirt in the following match against Denmark, taking over the number previously associated with Ronaldo. Government interventions followed, but the dispute remained unresolved.
Despite the disruption, Portugal won all of their first four matches and secured qualification for the quarter-finals before playing their remaining two fixtures.
The federation has now confirmed that Ronaldo’s suspension is nearing its end. His return for the next international window means he can rejoin the squad for the Nations League meetings with Denmark and Wales, having served the majority of the punishment imposed after his departure from camp.
