Al Masry came from behind to draw 1-1 with Abu Qir Fertilizers in Egyptian League week seven, with Salah Mohsen scoring from the penalty spot after Omar Ibrahim had given the visitors the lead.
The match began quietly, with neither side creating a clear opportunity during the opening stages. Abu Qir Fertilizers went closest when Ali Hussein’s effort inside the area was deflected behind by Al Masry defender Karim Iraqi.
Al Masry then threatened through a Mahmoud Hamada header, which went wide of the right post, while Yusuf Hamdy sent a long-range attempt harmlessly off target for Abu Qir Fertilizers.
The deadlock was broken after the interval. A long throw from Ramez Milad on the right found Omar Ibrahim inside the box, and he headed the ball into the right-hand corner to put Abu Qir Fertilizers ahead.
Al Masry responded with pressure. Mohamed Shokry fired over from inside the area, while Karim Iraqi tested Mahmoud Genesh with another effort that the goalkeeper saved.
Play was briefly stopped while Genesh received treatment, and the match was also interrupted to repair the Al Masry goal net. Abu Qir Fertilizers created another chance when Omar Ibrahim shot from outside the box, but Mohamed Seha produced a strong save.
Al Masry thought they had won a penalty after Mohamed El Shamy went down following a challenge from Mohamed Alaa. The referee initially pointed to the spot, but after reviewing the incident with the video assistant referee, he overturned the decision and signalled for play to continue.
A second penalty appeal later went in Al Masry’s favour. Ali Suleiman was fouled inside the area by Ramez Milad, and the referee awarded a spot-kick after checking the incident.
Salah Mohsen took responsibility and sent his penalty to the right of the goal to level the score. He later went close to adding another when his acrobatic effort inside the area was brilliantly stopped by Genesh.
Al Masry continued to search for a winner. Hussein Faisal shot wide from inside the box, while Baaher El Mohamady and Ahmed El Qarmouty both missed the target from distance. Karim Iraqi also sent an effort over the bar after a corner from Abd El Rahim Daghmoum.
Abu Qir Fertilizers had opportunities of their own late on. Yusuf Hamdy shot wide, Omar Ibrahim’s attempt ran out for a throw-in and a further Abu Qir corner was cleared by the Al Masry defence.
The visitors made five substitutions, while Al Masry made three changes. Hassan Ali was booked for protesting a decision, and the referee added eight minutes at the end of the match after two minutes had been added at half-time.
Salah Mohsen was later caught offside, while Mohamed Debash and Al Masry’s Abdullah Ziani were also flagged for offside during the match.
