Durban City have signed Ugandan international goalkeeper Salim Magoola on a free transfer as returning head coach Eric Tinkler begins reshaping the squad.
The 31-year-old joins the Citizens after leaving Richards Bay at the end of last season, adding Betway Premiership experience to the Durban-based side.
“Durban City FC is pleased to announce the signing of Ugandan international goalkeeper, Salim Magoola,” the club said.
“A new chapter begins in Blue & White. Welcome to the Citizens family, Magoola.”
Magoola moved to Richards Bay from Pretoria Callies in 2022 and quickly became the club’s first-choice goalkeeper. He was a regular during his first seasons with the Natal Rich Boyz before his opportunities decreased in his final campaign.
Kenyan international Ian Otieno eventually became Richards Bay’s preferred goalkeeper, limiting Magoola’s involvement.
The new Durban City signing also has experience outside South Africa. Before joining Richards Bay, he played for clubs in Uganda and Sudan, including KCCA FC, Al-Merrikh and Al-Hilal.
Tinkler begins second spell in charge
Magoola’s arrival is one of the first developments under Tinkler, who was appointed after Durban City parted company with Khalil Ben Youssef.
Tinkler returns to South African football after a spell in charge of Ghanaian giants Asante Kotoko.
The coach will now attempt to guide Durban City back on course in their domestic campaign while also preparing the team for the CAF Confederation Cup.
His return comes as the club seeks greater strength in goal, with Magoola offering experience at both domestic and international level.
