Evanilson gives Bournemouth half-time lead against Sturm Graz in Europa League

Bournemouth lead Sturm Graz 1-0 at half-time in their Europa League league-phase match at Vitality Stadium on Thursday, with Evanilson scoring a superb header shortly before the break.

The Cherries controlled much of the opening period and repeatedly looked to attack down the flanks. Marcus Tavernier had the first clear opportunity in the 12th minute, but his effort flew over the crossbar.

Bournemouth continued to apply pressure, with Ben Gannon-Doak particularly effective when driving forward on the right. Evanilson appeared to have put the home side ahead in the 28th minute, but the goal was disallowed because of an offence involving Oumar Diakite inside the penalty area.

The hosts eventually made their dominance count in the 43rd minute. Adam Smith delivered an accurate cross from the right and Evanilson met it with a header from considerable distance, expertly lifting the ball over the Sturm Graz goalkeeper to open the scoring.

Tavernier had also gone close in the 31st minute when his effort struck the post.

Sturm Graz created few opportunities during the first half. The Austrian side spent most of its time trying to withstand Bournemouth’s attacks and did not seriously test the home goalkeeper.

Bournemouth therefore take a deserved advantage into the interval, although they will need to remain alert because Sturm Graz still have the chance to find an opening and level the match.
