Dani Carvajal joins Getafe after La Liga registration issue resolved

Getafe have completed the signing of former Real Madrid defender Dani Carvajal on a free transfer, bringing an end to the uncertainty that had delayed the move.

The Spain right-back has agreed a contract with the club until the end of the current season.

Carvajal had been expected to join Getafe last week, but the transfer was put on hold over criteria set by the Spanish league association. Matteo Moretto subsequently reported that the issue had been resolved and that Carvajal was expected to sign the formal documents on Monday or Tuesday.

Getafe have now received approval from the Spanish league association for the deal to proceed.

Carvajal left Real Madrid after his contract with the club expired at the end of last season. His arrival at Getafe gives the club an experienced defender with a long record of success at both domestic and European level.

Before his departure, Carvajal made 451 appearances for Real Madrid, scoring 14 goals and providing 66 assists.

During his time at the Santiago Bernabeu, he won the UEFA Champions League six times, the UEFA Super Cup five times and the FIFA Club World Cup on five occasions. He also collected four Spanish Super Cups, four La Liga titles, two Copa del Rey trophies and one Intercontinental Cup.

The transfer had been subject to a review of whether Carvajal’s salary would fit within Getafe’s maximum squad-cost limit. Spanish newspaper Marca reported several days ago that the club first needed to establish that his proposed wages fell within that limit after the player’s valuation had been set by La Liga’s assessment committee.

That evaluation takes multiple factors into account. These include a player’s age, athletic condition, injury record, the state of the transfer market and the length of the proposed contract.

The committee also considers the player’s number of international appearances over the previous three years, individual awards, international and domestic honours, and his percentage of appearances during the current and previous seasons.

The approval means Getafe can register Carvajal despite the initial concerns surrounding the transfer.

Getafe are currently 14th in the La Liga table, with eight points from two wins, two draws and four defeats.
