Lens v Lyon: Can the in-form visitors extend their unbeaten Ligue 1 run?

Ligue 1 MacDonald’s returns after the 16-day FIFA international break with a notable fixture as RC Lens host Olympique Lyonnais at Stade Felix Bollaert on Friday, 9 October 2026, with kick-off at 18:45 GMT.

Nasser Eddy, a consultant for NCI Sport and presenter of the UEFA Champions League on radio Nostalgie, expects an open contest between a struggling Lens side and a Lyon team sitting second behind AS Monaco.

Yannick Cahuzak’s Lens began the season with considerable promise, beating Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 in the Trophee des Champions before defeating AJ Auxerre 5-2 on the opening day on 22 August. However, three defeats and a 2-2 draw at Le Mans in their following four league matches have left the reigning French runners-up 15th before matchweek six.

Their only other recent success came in the UEFA Champions League, where they beat Slavia Prague 3-2 on 10 September after scoring in stoppage time. Defensive frailties remain a concern: Lens have conceded at least twice in five of their six official matches this season, excluding the Trophee des Champions.

Captain Florian Thauvin has contributed four goals and two assists in six appearances, but those attacking efforts have not compensated for the problems at the back. Samson Baidoo and Maik Nawrocki are both unavailable through injury, leaving Cahuzak with a major selection problem.

Lens are likely to continue their attacking approach, having averaged 8.5 corners across their past four competitive fixtures. A 2-0 friendly victory over Standard Liege last Friday may also have lifted the mood among Mathieu Udol and his team-mates.

Olympique Lyonnais, meanwhile, remain unbeaten after five Ligue 1 matches. Paulo Fonseca’s side started their competitive campaign in early August with the UEFA Champions League qualifying round, although defeat by Fenerbahce ended their hopes of reaching the league phase. They have also lost key players including Malick Fofana and Ainsley Maitland-Niles.

Lyon went into the international break after beating Anderlecht 2-1 in their opening UEFA Europa League league-phase match and defeating Stade Rennais 4-0 in Ligue 1. They are joint top scorers alongside Strasbourg and have the division’s best defensive record, while averaging almost 15 shots per league match.

The clubs met three times last season. Each won the league fixture away from home, while their Coupe de France meeting ended 2-2 before Lens prevailed 5-4 on penalties on their way to winning the competition. Lyon have avoided defeat on their last two league visits to Stade Felix Bollaert and lead the last 20 meetings, with nine wins to Lens’s seven and four draws.

Ernest Nuamah is the key player to watch. The Ghana international has scored three goals and supplied one assist in his last three Ligue 1 games, including a brace against Stade Rennais. He then endured two defeats with the Black Stars in the opening two 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches, including a 4-2 home loss to Gambia despite scoring from the penalty spot. The 22-year-old returns to club football seeking a response.

The main 1xBet prices are 2.91 for a Lyon win, 1.44 for both teams to score, and 9.5 for a 1-2 result. Lens to take more than 6.5 corners is priced at 2.01, while Thauvin and Nuamah are 2.8 and 3.7 respectively to score at any time. Odds may change.
