Mahmoud Mamdouh hat-trick puts Modern Sport striker top of Egyptian Premier League scoring charts

Mahmoud Mamdouh says he will do everything possible to earn a call-up to the Egypt squad after becoming the Egyptian Premier League’s leading scorer.

The Modern Sport forward scored three times as his side beat Al Sharqia Enppi 3-2 at Cairo Stadium in the sixth round of the league season.

The match featured five goals, with Mamdouh becoming the first player to score a hat-trick in the Egyptian Premier League this season. He also made history as the first Modern Sport player to score three goals in a single league match.

The result continued Modern Sport’s impressive start to the campaign. The club moved up to fourth place with 13 points, level with third-placed Zamalek on a temporary basis.

Al Sharqia Enppi remain 16th after their points tally stayed at four.

Mamdouh’s treble took his total to six goals, leaving him at the top of the league’s scoring standings. It was the first hat-trick of his career and his first in the competition.

“Praise be to God. Our focus against Al Sharqia Enppi was on securing the win, and that is what happened in the end despite falling behind in the score,” Mamdouh told Modern’s channel.

He said Modern Sport’s collective approach had been central to their performances this season.

“The secret behind Modern Sport’s success this season is that all the players are united and our objective is to win, regardless of who plays,” he said.

Mamdouh also rejected the idea that his three goals were solely down to his own performance.

“Scoring three goals was a blessing from God. It was not an individual effort, but the result of the work done by my team-mates,” he added.

The striker highlighted his understanding with fellow Modern Sport player Mohamed Massad as another factor behind his form.

“There is definitely an understanding between Mohamed Massad and me. Each of us understands the other player’s movements,” Mamdouh said.

He described his first career hat-trick as an especially significant moment.

“I scored a hat-trick for the first time in my career and I cannot describe how happy I am. The ball is even beside me on the bed,” he said.

Modern Sport’s 13-point return from their opening six games is the club’s second-best start in the Egyptian Premier League. Their record opening to the competition came in the 2022-23 season, when they collected 14 points from their first six matches under Ali Maher.

Mamdouh ended by speaking about his ambition to represent Egypt under manager Hossam Hassan.

“Every player dreams of playing for Egypt. I will give everything to achieve this dream, and it is an honour for any player to train under Hossam Hassan,” he said.
