Orlando Pirates are beginning to feel the effects of Oswin Appollis’ loss of form, with the winger struggling to reproduce the performances that made him one of the standout signings of the 2025/26 season.

Appollis played a key role in the Buccaneers’ treble-winning campaign, scoring nine goals in the Betway Premiership and earning the Midfielder of the Season award. His pace, creativity and ability to trouble defenders made him one of the most feared attacking players in South African football.

However, the 2026 FIFA World Cup with Bafana Bafana appears to have been followed by a difficult spell at club level, with the winger managing just one goal this season.

His struggles are becoming a concern for Pirates, particularly as they seek to maintain their competitiveness in major matches where his attacking quality could prove decisive.

Ouaddou drops Appollis for MTN8 final

Appollis’ diminishing influence was evident in the MTN8 final against Mamelodi Sundowns, where head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou opted to leave the winger on the bench.

Instead, Tshepang Moremi was handed a starting role, but he failed to make a significant impact as Sundowns secured a 2-0 victory.

Appollis entered the contest in the second half, but he was unable to change the outcome, leaving Pirates to reflect on a disappointing defeat in one of the season’s major fixtures.

The decision to bench a player who had been instrumental in their previous campaign raised questions about his current standing in the team and whether he can rediscover the form that made him such a valuable asset.

For a player whose attacking threat once provided Pirates with a significant advantage, the lack of consistent contributions is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.

Ouaddou explains Appollis decision

Despite leaving Appollis out of his starting XI, Ouaddou was quick to reaffirm his confidence in the winger after the final.

“He’s one of the of the best players in the country, in our team as well,” Ouaddou said.

The Pirates manager explained that his selection was influenced by the tactical approach he wanted to adopt, with Appollis identified as a potential game-changer from the bench.

“But you know when you’re playing a game, you have a strategy. You can play in different phases, you have to anticipate about what can happen in the second half.

“We planned to bring him quickly maybe after the second half. I think we did it last year. You know how I’m working, I always have some players who are impact players. So today, he was he was part of the impact players, somebody who can change the game.”

Ouaddou’s explanation suggests that the decision was not necessarily a reflection of a complete loss of faith in Appollis, but rather a tactical choice intended to influence the contest later in the game.

Early goal disrupted Pirates’ plans

The Moroccan coach also pointed to the early goal conceded by Pirates as a major factor in the defeat, explaining that it forced his side to abandon aspects of their original strategy.

“But the fact that we conceded early changed our plan because we were chasing. So Oswin is a fantastic players, he’s a very important player for us, an international players. But today we take the decision to bring him as impact player to change the game,” Ouaddou said.

Although Appollis was introduced in the second half, he could not provide the attacking spark Pirates needed to get back into the contest.

His inability to influence the final underlined the challenge facing both player and coach as they seek to restore his effectiveness in the final third.

Pirates need their match-winner back

Appollis’ struggles could become a significant problem for Pirates if they persist throughout the campaign.

His performances last season established him as an important source of goals and creativity, making his current lack of output a concern as the Buccaneers pursue further silverware.

While Ouaddou continues to back the winger publicly, Appollis must translate that confidence into improved performances on the pitch.

Pirates need his pace, direct running and ability to unlock defences, especially against opponents who can punish even the smallest attacking deficiencies.

The MTN8 final provided another reminder of the importance of having influential players deliver on the biggest occasions. For Appollis, rediscovering his best form could be crucial to ensuring Pirates remain competitive when the stakes are highest.
