Mohamed Hany says Al Ahly are working hard to put last season behind them after his goal helped secure a 2-0 victory over Zamalek in the Egyptian Premier League.
The defender opened the scoring in the 38th minute of the sixth-round match, striking powerfully before the ball deflected off another player and wrong-footed Zamalek goalkeeper El Mahdy Soliman.
Hany, who was named Player of the Match, said the result was important both psychologically and for Al Ahly’s position in the league table.
“The win is important for us morally and for our position in the league standings,” he told On Sport. “I congratulate the Al Ahly fans. This is the real support, and I thank them for attending and for their constant backing.”
He also praised the team’s staff and players, while stressing the importance of moving on from the previous campaign.
“I congratulate the coaching staff and the players. Everyone showed great character, and that is what produces victories,” Hany said.
“We work hard and make every effort to forget what happened last season. The derby is one of the best matches of the season, and I look forward to these games.”
Hany’s goal was his first for Al Ahly in 525 days. His previous league goal came against Haras El Hodoud during the 2024-25 season.
It was also his first goal contribution in a derby against Zamalek, in his 23rd appearance in the fixture. The effort represented his first goal contribution of the current season after four appearances in all competitions.
Asked whether the finish had been planned, Hany said it was simply a decision made during the match.
“I did not prepare for the goal before the game. It was just a decision during the play,” he said.
The defender declined to discuss his contract situation, saying Al Ahly’s immediate attention was on their upcoming fixtures.
“I do not want to talk about renewing my contract,” Hany said. “We have a match in the Confederation Cup, and after that we will prepare for the league matches.”
Hany also marked a personal milestone, revealing he had now made 408 appearances for Al Ahly.
“I have reached 408 matches, and that is something significant for me,” he said. “I am proud to have come through Al Ahly’s youth system and to have played this number of matches. It is a great honour for me.”
