Manchester City moved into a commanding lead over Liverpool in their Premier League week-six meeting after second-half goals from Rayan Cherki, Jeremy Doku and Erling Haaland.
The game was goalless for much of the first half, with neither side creating a clear opportunity during the opening 30 minutes. Liverpool tried to find a route through Manchester City’s defence, while City circulated the ball in midfield without seriously threatening the goal.
Florian Wirtz delivered Liverpool’s first notable cross into the penalty area, but Donnarumma dealt with it comfortably. Liverpool also saw a corner cleared successfully by Wirtz, while Jeremy Jacquet dealt with a Manchester City delivery from an Enzo Fernandez corner.
City created their best opening of the half when Enzo Fernandez struck a powerful effort from outside the area, forcing an impressive save from the goalkeeper. Liverpool responded with efforts from Munoz and Alexis Mac Allister, although both failed to beat the goalkeeper, with Mac Allister’s shot going wide.
There were yellow cards for Liverpool players during the half, while Elliott Anderson won a free-kick for Manchester City in the centre of the pitch. Semenyo also sent a long-range effort wide, and Fernandez was caught offside. One minute of added time was played before the interval.
The second half began with the score still 0-0, and the deadlock remained after the first 15 minutes. Manchester City made a change before the match took a decisive turn, while another Liverpool player was booked.
Liverpool were then reduced to 10 men when one of their players received a second yellow card and was sent off.
City took advantage with a flowing team move. After a series of passes opened up the Liverpool defence, Rayan Cherki dribbled past a defender before producing an excellent finish from inside the penalty area to put Manchester City ahead.
Doku soon doubled the advantage with a powerful inside-foot finish from inside the box. Manchester City continued to press, and Josko Gvardiol went close with another strong effort that narrowly missed the target.
The third goal followed when Doku’s powerful shot from inside the area reached Haaland, who finished from close range.
With half an hour of the second half played, Manchester City remained in control. Liverpool made two substitutions, while Manchester City also used another replacement. The match also featured Joe Gomez, Ayyoub Bouaddi, Alan Elias, Ronald Araujo, Jeremie Frimpong, Rio Ngumoha, Trey Nyoni, Nico O’Reilly, Ryan Gravenberch, Iliman Ndiaye and Jeremy Jacquet.
