Lyon lose Loïs Openda for Crystal Palace clash

Lyon striker Loïs Openda is expected to miss the club’s UEFA Europa League encounter against Crystal Palace next Thursday after sustaining a right-leg injury during Friday’s clash against Lens.

The Belgian forward, who has Morocco roots was forced off in the 60th minute of the encounter following a collision with Lens defender Ismaëlo Ganiou, raising concerns over his fitness ahead of Lyon’s upcoming fixtures.

Openda’s condition initially sparked fears of a serious injury after he was seen leaving the stadium on crutches. However, subsequent medical examinations have reportedly ruled out a major injury, offering some relief to the Lyon technical team.

Despite the encouraging assessment, the 26-year-old is still expected to be unavailable for Lyon’s Europa League meeting with Crystal Palace, with his participation in the Ligue 1 fixture against OGC Nice next Sunday also considered unlikely.

His anticipated absence represents a significant setback for Lyon manager Paulo Fonseca, who has relied heavily on the Belgian forward since his arrival on loan from Juventus.

Openda has started all 10 of his appearances for Lyon this season, recording two goals and one assist. His regular involvement has made him an important option in Fonseca’s attacking setup, with the coaching staff now facing the prospect of reshuffling their forward line for the upcoming matches.

The timing of the injury is particularly frustrating for Lyon, who will be keen to maintain their momentum in European competition while continuing their campaign in France’s top flight.

The French side face a demanding schedule, with the visit of Crystal Palace presenting another important test of their European ambitions before the trip into their next domestic assignment against Nice.

While the latest medical findings suggest Openda has avoided a serious injury, Lyon will be cautious about rushing him back before he is fully fit. His recovery will therefore be closely monitored as the club assesses his availability for the matches ahead.

For Fonseca, the priority will be to find an effective attacking alternative capable of filling the gap left by the Belgian international should he miss both fixtures.

Lyon will hope Openda’s absence proves to be short-lived, allowing the forward to return to action once he has recovered sufficiently from the injury.
