Eberl backs Manuel Neuer as Bayern Munich’s first-choice goalkeeper after Augsburg error

Max Eberl has reaffirmed Manuel Neuer’s position as Bayern Munich’s first-choice goalkeeper despite the mistake that contributed to Augsburg’s opening goal in Saturday’s 2-2 draw.

Neuer’s error came in the opening seconds of the Bundesliga match, allowing Augsburg to take an early advantage. Bayern Munich ultimately secured a point after the two sides shared four goals.

“There is absolutely no reason to question anything just because Manuel Neuer has made a mistake now,” Bayern Munich chief executive Eberl told German newspaper Bild.

“Manuel Neuer is still our number one goalkeeper,” he added.

Eberl also spoke positively about the progress of Bayern’s young goalkeeper Jonas Urbig, who is developing while working alongside the experienced Neuer.

“Without exaggeration, the way we are developing Jonas Urbig, despite having a world-class goalkeeper like Manuel Neuer, is truly remarkable,” Eberl said.

He highlighted Urbig’s growing status, experience and performances for the national team.

“For Jonas to have reached this position already, to have gained experience and to have performed excellently with the national team is really exceptional,” Eberl added.

“Everything is going according to the plan we have established so far.”

The draw left Bayern Munich second in the Bundesliga table with 11 points, two behind leaders Borussia Dortmund.

Bayern’s next fixture is against Norwegian side Viking FK in the second round of the Champions League league phase on Tuesday.
