Jordan Henderson makes Chelsea history with record-breaking start against Bournemouth

Jordan Henderson scored twice and provided an assist as Chelsea beat Bournemouth 5-1, producing a rare Premier League feat 28 years after Emil Heskey achieved it.

Henderson made an immediate impact in his first Premier League start at Stamford Bridge for Chelsea. He opened the scoring after only two minutes of the sixth-round match on Saturday, before setting up Morgan Rogers for the home side’s second goal just a minute later.

According to Opta, Henderson scored and assisted within two minutes and 29 seconds of kick-off. Only one player has completed that combination earlier in Premier League history: former Liverpool and Leicester City forward Emil Heskey.

Heskey scored and created a goal during the opening two minutes of Leicester City’s match against Derby County in April 1998.

“Jordan Henderson scored a goal and provided an assist within just two minutes and 29 seconds of the start of Chelsea’s match against Bournemouth,” Opta said. “In Premier League history, the only player to do so earlier was Emil Heskey, who scored and assisted within the first two minutes for Leicester City against Derby County in April 1998.”

Henderson, who joined Chelsea during last summer’s transfer window, added to his contribution in the 70th minute. He found the net directly from a free-kick, completing his second goal of the game and rounding off Chelsea’s 5-1 victory.

The match was Henderson’s first start at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League, but he became the central figure in a dominant performance by the hosts after his early goal and assist.

At the age of 36, he also reached another notable milestone. EuroFoot statistics stated that Henderson became Chelsea’s oldest player to score twice in a Premier League match since John Terry did so in 2017.

Henderson moved to Chelsea on a free transfer last summer after spending the previous season with Brentford. He was also included in England’s squad for the 2026 World Cup.

The victory saw Chelsea score five times against Bournemouth, with Henderson’s two goals coming either side of his assist for Rogers. His first-half contribution established the early advantage, while his second-half free-kick completed his personal double.
