Werder Bremen scored twice in the closing stages to draw 2-2 with Borussia Dortmund in the fifth round of the Bundesliga, with Niclas Fullkrug’s stoppage-time header denying Dortmund victory.
Dortmund had appeared to be in control after scoring twice in five minutes, but Werder Bremen responded with goals from Ludovit Reis and Fullkrug to claim a point in the final moments.
The result leaves Borussia Dortmund top of the Bundesliga with 13 points, while Werder Bremen move to eight points in fourth place. Dortmund had won each of their first four matches of the season, but this was their first dropped points in the current campaign.
The opening goal arrived in the 80th minute after a quick Dortmund counter-attack. Serhou Guirassy carried the move forward before passing to Fabio Silva, who attempted to shoot. The ball instead reached Daniel Svensson, who finished from close range to put the hosts ahead.
Dortmund doubled their advantage five minutes later. Joey Veerman delivered an accurate cross into the penalty area and Nico Schlotterbeck met it with a well-directed header to make it 2-0.
Werder Bremen reduced the deficit three minutes later through Reis, who struck powerfully from outside the penalty area. His shot flew into the Borussia Dortmund net and gave the visitors renewed hope of salvaging a result.
That comeback was completed in the second minute of added time. Fullkrug rose to meet a cross and headed the ball beyond the Dortmund goalkeeper, securing a 2-2 draw in the closing seconds.
The goal was Fullkrug’s fourth in five Bundesliga rounds this season. Dortmund, meanwhile, were left to settle for a point despite having led by two goals with only a few minutes remaining.
