Ferran Torres wins UNFP award after flying start at Paris Saint-Germain

Ferran Torres has been named the UNFP Ligue 1 Player of the Month for September after making an outstanding start to life at Paris Saint-Germain.

The 26-year-old joined the French club from Barcelona this summer for slightly more than €40m and has scored seven goals in six appearances in all competitions.

Two of those goals came in three Ligue 1 matches during September, including one in the fixture known as Le Classique. His performances earned him a place on the shortlist for the monthly award, which was confirmed by the French professional players’ union on Friday.

UNFP announced the result on social media, writing: “Welcome to Paris. One month to settle in, one month to reign: @FerranTorres20 has left his mark on his debut with @PSG_inside. He is the winner of the UNFP Trophy for Ligue 1 Player of the Month for September. Congratulations Ferran.”

Torres began the month with a 27-minute appearance in a 2-1 defeat by Monaco. He then rediscovered his scoring touch, netting the winning goal in a 1-0 victory over Brest before scoring again as Paris Saint-Germain beat Marseille 2-1.

His form also continued in the Champions League, where he scored a hat-trick in a 6-1 victory over Slovan Bratislava during September.

The award represents an early personal success for Torres despite Paris Saint-Germain’s relatively slow start to the Ligue 1 campaign. The club sit sixth in the table with eight points from their opening five matches, five points behind leaders Monaco.

Torres’ seven goals across six games have nevertheless provided an immediate return on Paris Saint-Germain’s significant investment and established him as one of the leading performers at the club in the opening weeks of the season.
