Ivan Toney matches Omar Al-Somah’s Roshn Saudi League record for a second time this season
Al-Ahli forward Ivan Toney scored his 11th goal of the Roshn Saudi League season as his side beat Al-Fateh 4-0 on Friday, drawing level with Omar Al-Somah’s record for goals after eight rounds.
The England striker completed the scoring in the 60th minute at Midan Tamweel Aloula Stadium in Al-Ahsa, producing a clever finish that deceived the goalkeeper before dropping over him and into the net.
The result keeps Al-Ahli’s impressive start to the league campaign moving, while Toney strengthens his position at the top of the scoring charts. He now leads the standings by six goals from his nearest rival.
According to the Thmanyah channels, Toney’s 11-goal tally matches the historic mark set by Syrian striker Al-Somah in the 2016-17 season. Al-Somah remains the player with the highest number of goals scored after the opening eight rounds of the Roshn Saudi League.
Toney had already matched another of Al-Somah’s achievements in the previous round, when he reached 10 goals after seven matches. That was also the total Al-Somah recorded at the same stage of his record-breaking 2016-17 campaign.
The Al-Ahli striker also equalled Al-Somah’s mark last season by scoring in nine consecutive Roshn Saudi League matches.
Toney is now pursuing the Saudi league’s top-scorer award for the first time. He finished second in the scoring charts in each of the previous two seasons, and his latest goal further extended his lead at the summit.
