Modern Sport open Egypt Capital Cup with victory as Ghazl El Mahalla and Abu Qir Fertilizers draw
Modern Sport began their Egypt Capital Cup group campaign with a 2-0 win over National Bank of Egypt in Group Two.
Ghannam Mohamed and Ali Fawzi scored the goals as Modern Sport secured an important victory in the opening round of the group stage.
The result puts Modern Sport level with Pyramids at the top of the group on three points.
Modern Sport took the lead after only seven minutes when Ghannam Mohamed struck a powerful effort from outside the penalty area that found the net.
The goal was a repeat of his scoring achievement against National Bank of Egypt in last season’s Egypt Capital Cup, when the two sides drew 1-1.
Modern Sport doubled their advantage in the 38th minute after being awarded a penalty. Ali Fawzi sent the spot-kick to the goalkeeper’s right to give his side a commanding lead.
The victory was Modern Sport’s first in the group stage of the Egypt Capital Cup.
In Group Four, Ghazl El Mahalla and Abu Qir Fertilizers shared the points after a 1-1 draw in their opening group match.
Abu Qir Fertilizers went ahead in the 62nd minute through Ali Hussein, who headed a well-delivered cross from Ahmed Dahesh into the Ghazl El Mahalla net.
Ghazl El Mahalla restored parity 11 minutes later when Yahya Zakaria converted a penalty in the 73rd minute.
The draw leaves both teams with one point in a group that also includes Al Masry, Ceramica Cleopatra, Montakhab El Suweis and Petrojet.
