Real Madrid ‘interested in Napoli midfielder Scott McTominay at Jose Mourinho’s request’
Real Madrid are interested in signing Napoli midfielder Scott McTominay during the January transfer window, according to reports in Italy.
The Scotland international joined Napoli from Manchester United in the summer of 2024 and has since established himself as an important player for the Italian club.
Naples-based newspaper Il Mattino reports that Jose Mourinho has asked Real Madrid officials to pursue a deal for McTominay as he looks to strengthen his squad in January.
McTominay rediscovered his best form after moving to Serie A, scoring 13 goals and providing six assists in all competitions as Napoli won the Italian league title. He was also named Serie A’s best player for the 2024-25 season.
In the following campaign, he scored 14 goals and created four more in 44 appearances.
Mourinho previously handed McTominay his first opportunity to play for Manchester United while he was manager of the club.
Real Madrid’s reported interest comes as questions surround McTominay’s contract situation at Napoli. Although the 29-year-old still has two years remaining on his current deal, reports say he wants a significant new contract to continue with the Italian side.
McTominay returned to training this week after being absent for almost a month following minor surgery to correct an irregular heartbeat.
