Ernest Nuamah scores twice as Lyon return gathers pace

Ernest Nuamah marked his return to prominence with two goals for Olympique Lyonnais in Saturday’s victory over Rennes, strengthening the case that the Ghana forward is rediscovering his best form.

Named in the starting line-up, Nuamah played a central role in Lyon’s success before being substituted in the 72nd minute to a warm reception from the home supporters.

The performance was another significant step in his recovery from a serious injury which kept him out of action for more than a year. Nuamah returned to competitive football towards the end of last season, then represented Ghana at the World Cup before beginning the new campaign with OL.

He had already scored in Ligue 1 against Auxerre and in the Champions League qualifying rounds against Sparta Prague. His two-goal display against Rennes takes his tally to four goals and one assist in eight appearances this season.

Reflecting on his progress after the match, Nuamah said: “My injury kept me away from football for a long time, but I am back.”

His manager was also encouraged by the forward’s contribution and believes he can continue to develop.

“We spoke about being decisive and he was today. He is improving and he had a great match,” the manager said.

Nuamah’s latest display will raise hopes at Lyon that the 22-year-old is steadily regaining his confidence and can once again become an important part of the club’s attacking options.
