Spain and Portugal meet in Iberian battle for Women’s U20 World Cup quarter-final place

Spain and Portugal face each other in the last 16 of the Women’s U20 World Cup in Katowice, Poland, with a place in the quarter-finals at stake in an all-Iberian contest.

The two sides arrive at the knockout stage after contrasting campaigns in the group phase. Spain, world champions in 2022, have regularly reached the quarter-finals since 2016 and enter the tie with an impressive attacking record. They scored 16 goals in the opening round and conceded only once.

Portugal are competing at the Women’s U20 World Cup for the first time. They began the tournament with defeat against the reigning champions but recovered strongly, drawing with Colombia before beating Costa Rica to secure their place in the knockout stages.

Their main strengths have been a compact defensive shape, tactical discipline and quick transitions when possession changes hands. Carolina Tristao and Anna Marques provide the team with the ability to control the tempo and add the physical intensity required in a high-level knockout match.

Spain’s experience and record make them the favourites on paper, but Portugal’s freedom as first-time participants could work in their favour. The Portuguese side will be aiming to make an immediate impression on the competition, while Spain will seek to confirm their status as one of the tournament’s leading teams.
