Sunderland return to Europe with AZ Alkmaar test: predicted line-ups

Sunderland AFC return to European competition on Wednesday when they host AZ Alkmaar in the opening round of the Europa League.

The match at the Stadium of Light is scheduled to kick off at 19:00 GMT, with Sunderland preparing for their first European fixture in several years.

Sunderland AFC are expected to line up in a 4-2-3-1 formation, with Robin Roefs in goal behind a defence of Trai Hume, Luke O’Nien, Omar Alderete and Reinildo Mandava.

Granit Xhaka and Chris Rigg are set to form the midfield partnership, while Thomas Meunier, Enzo Le Fee and Malick Fofana could operate behind Wilson Isidor.

AZ Alkmaar are also expected to use a 4-2-3-1 system. Jari De Busser is likely to start in goal, with Seiya Maikuma, Wouter Goes, Lewis Schouten and Mateo Chavez in defence.

Jordy Clasie and Peer Koopmeiners are in line to play in midfield, while Calvin Stengs, Dave Kwakman and Ro-Zangelo Daal are expected to support Mexx Meerdink in attack.

Sunderland will be without Habib Diarra, who has a thigh injury, and Romaine Mundle, who is recovering from a knee problem.

The final team selections will be confirmed before kick-off.
