Mofokeng and Makgalwa among South African scorers in busy weekend abroad

Relebohile Mofokeng and Keletso Makgalwa were on target as South African players and coaches made an impact across Europe and Africa over the weekend.

Mofokeng scored his third goal for Royal Union Saint-Gilloise in their emphatic 5-0 victory over Lommel SK in the Belgian Jupiler Pro League.

Shandre Campbell played the opening 45 minutes for Kortrijk, who were beaten 3-0 by RAAL La Louviere in the same division.

Makgalwa found the net as Simba recorded a 6-1 win against Mighty Wanderers in the second leg of the CAF Champions League first preliminary round. The result took Steve Barker’s side through to the next stage.

There was further progress for South African coaches and players in the competition. Rulani Mokwena guided Pyramids into the next round following a 7-1 aggregate victory over Gor Mahia, while Manqoba Mngqithi’s Simba SC advanced after a 3-2 aggregate win against Gaborone United.

Tshegofatso Mabasa and Devin Titus also moved on with Maghreb Fez, who defeated Rahimo 4-1 on aggregate.

In Austria, Yusuf Maart set up Ried’s goal in a 1-1 draw with RB Salzburg. Jaedin Rhodes also appeared for Ried, playing 17 minutes.

Eric Tinkler led Asante Kotoko to their first victory of the season in the Ghanaian Premier League, with his side beating Heart of Lions 2-1.

Ime Okon played 15 minutes for Hannover 96 in their 2-1 defeat by Nurnberg in Germany, while Bafana Bafana midfielder Yaya Sithole had a 15-minute appearance for Tondela in their 2-0 win over Portimonense in Portugal.

Thapelo Maseko played 66 minutes for Copenhagen, who defeated Horsens 2-0 in Denmark.

In Cyprus, Mihlali Mayambela featured for 67 minutes as Omonia drew 0-0 with Apollon. Luther Singh completed the full match for AEL Limassol in their 2-1 victory over Nea Salamis.

Olwethu Makhanya played all 90 minutes for Rangers as they beat arch-rivals Celtic 3-0 in the Scottish League Cup.

Meanwhile, Sipho Mbule started for Zakho SC in their 2-1 league victory over Al Mosul in Iraq. The result ended Zakho’s run of five matches without a win.
