Mamelodi Sundowns snatch late draw to deny Chippa United first win

Mamelodi Sundowns avoided a historic defeat after Antonio van Wyk scored in the fifth minute of added time to secure a 1-1 draw against Chippa United in the Betway Premiership.

Chippa, who are still searching for their first league victory, had looked set to claim a notable result after Sergio Kammies put them ahead in the 78th minute. But Sundowns rescued a point with the final kick of the match at Buffalo City Stadium.

Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso made three changes to the team that defeated Siwelele FC on Wednesday evening, bringing Fawaaz Basadien, Thapelo Morena and Grant Kekana back into the starting line-up. Letlhaku retained his place.

Cardoso had criticised the decision to move the match to a different venue earlier in the week, but a strong home crowd created a lively atmosphere from the opening stages.

The visitors controlled possession and territory early on, with Chippa United defending in numbers and keeping all 11 players behind the ball. Sundowns came close to breaking through before the 20-minute mark when Brayan Leon met the ball with a volley, but goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali produced an excellent save.

Chippa’s approach was similar to the one they used against Orlando Pirates last month. Brandon Truter’s side remained deep for long periods and looked to exploit the pace of Justice Figareido on the counter-attack, leaving Cardoso aware that his team would need patience.

Sundowns altered their attacking line at half-time, with Cassius Mailula replacing Letlhaku. The change was intended to add greater energy to an attack that had been well contained by Chippa defender Imraan Jones.

Chippa had an opportunity to take the lead after 70 minutes when Figareido burst down the left and entered the penalty area. However, Thapelo Morena recovered quickly to make an important block and prevent the winger from finishing.

The hosts did not have to wait long for another opening. With 13 minutes remaining, substitute Sergio Kammies scored with his first touch, turning Mfecane’s low delivery into the net with a well-executed finish.

Chippa were unable to protect their advantage in the closing moments. Nwabali failed to deal convincingly with a late ball, and substitute Antonio van Wyk reacted fastest to send a close-range volley into the net in the fourth minute of stoppage time.

Chippa United travel to TS Galaxy before hosting Kruger United. Their remaining fixtures are away to Stellenbosch, at home against Chippa United and at home to Kaizer Chiefs.

Mamelodi Sundowns face Al-Ahli in the Intercontinental Cup, followed by a CAF Champions League match against Williete. They then visit Richards Bay before another CAF Champions League meeting with Williete and a home fixture against Durban City.
