Mokobodi says hard work has powered rapid rise at Orlando Pirates

Orlando Pirates midfielder Thapelo Mokobodi says he joined the club with an open mind and did not expect to establish himself as a regular so soon.

The 23-year-old was given an immediate opportunity by coach Abdeslam Ouaddou after several key players left at the start of the season. Mokobodi had previously worked with Ouaddou for a short period at Marumo Gallants.

Mokobodi’s progress was underlined when he was named Man of the Match after helping Orlando Pirates beat Kaizer Chiefs 2-1 in the Soweto Derby. He provided two assists as Pirates secured all three points in the fixture.

Speaking to SABC Sport, Mokobodi said he had anticipated a longer wait before being given his chance.

“I just had to believe in my talent, work hard and be willing to learn. I know that when I get an opportunity I must use it well.”

The midfielder also credited his team-mates for helping him make a smooth transition from Stellenbosch FC to Orlando Pirates.

His performance against Kaizer Chiefs was the latest indication of his growing influence, but Mokobodi said his focus before the match had been on contributing at his highest level rather than simply chasing individual recognition.

“I asked God to give me strength and for me to play for the man of the match award. I know that if I play at my highest level then we are going to win.”

The result gave Orlando Pirates victory in a major Soweto Derby, while Mokobodi collected personal recognition for his contribution.

He said securing the win and taking all three points was particularly meaningful because he has only recently joined Orlando Pirates, describing the occasion as one he would cherish forever.
