Kobbie Mainoo credits Michael Carrick with giving him greater Manchester United influence
Kobbie Mainoo says Michael Carrick has helped him become a more confident and influential midfielder at Manchester United by encouraging him to take greater responsibility during matches.
The 21-year-old made a strong impact in the second half of last season after Carrick became manager in January. Mainoo played in 16 of United’s 17 matches under the former midfielder, helping the club secure Champions League qualification and earning a new long-term contract in April.
Both Manchester United and Mainoo have faced difficulties during the current campaign, but the midfielder remains appreciative of the faith shown in him by Carrick and his coaching staff.
Speaking before Tuesday’s Champions League match against Roma at Old Trafford, Mainoo said Carrick’s experience of playing for the club had been particularly valuable.
“I’m very grateful to the boss for putting the trust in me, as soon as he came in, and putting that belief in me and giving me all the advice that he has,” Mainoo said.
“He’s a player who’s been at this club and knows the history of this club and knows what it takes to win.”
Mainoo believes Carrick’s understanding of Manchester United has helped him recognise the standards required to succeed at Old Trafford. He has also been encouraged to become more assertive and influential when games are under way.
“I’ve tried to take on more responsibility in the team. I want to impose myself more in games, and they’ve definitely helped me to do that and given me more responsibility with taking the ball,” he added.
“There’s been ups and downs, but I have to continue to try and have belief in myself and impose myself on games even in these tough times.”
Mainoo embraces academy responsibility
Mainoo also discussed his role in preserving Manchester United’s traditions after progressing through the club’s Academy from a young age.
The club recently marked 89 years of naming at least one homegrown player in every matchday squad. That sequence has now reached 4,374 consecutive matches.
Mainoo feels players who have come through the Academy have a responsibility to help carry Manchester United’s identity and values into the future.
“I feel I take some responsibility in that and in spreading the word of what Manchester United is, coming up through the Academy,” he said.
“I plan to send that message for hopefully as long as I can.”
