Christopher Nkunku: ‘I didn’t understand’ why AC Milan let me leave

Christopher Nkunku has revealed his surprise at AC Milan’s decision to allow him to leave the club, admitting he “didn’t understand” why the Italian giants chose to part ways with him.

The 28-year-old forward joined Milan from Chelsea in the summer of 2025 but endured a difficult first season in Italy. Nkunku scored eight goals and supplied three assists in 35 appearances across all competitions before returning to former club RB Leipzig.

Nkunku’s spell at Milan was considerably less productive than expected, although he believes his difficulties were partly linked to the club’s football philosophy, which he felt did not match his style.

Nkunku struggled to find his place

The Frenchman also reflected on his earlier problems at Chelsea, where injuries disrupted his progress after an encouraging start following his move to England.

“When I went to Chelsea, things started well and then I suffered an injury at the end of the last friendly. After that, everything changed,” he said.

“I had my first operation, I wanted to get back on the pitch quickly and there were also many changes. I didn’t like my role at Chelsea.”

Nkunku said his experience at Milan was different because injuries were not an issue, but he still found it difficult to thrive within the team’s tactical approach.

“At Milan, on the other hand, I didn’t have any injuries, but the football philosophy was different from mine. So, as soon as I had the opportunity to come back here and play my football, I took it.”

‘I didn’t understand’ Milan decision

Despite recognising the differences in playing philosophy, Nkunku remains puzzled by Milan’s decision to let him leave after just one season.

Asked about his departure, the former Chelsea attacker admitted the decision caught him off guard.

“It’s a decision that has to be respected, but I didn’t understand why they acted that way either. I was surprised. In any case, I wish them a good season,” he added.

Nkunku has now opted for a return to familiar surroundings at Leipzig, where he previously established himself as one of Europe’s most exciting attacking players.

Leipzig return brings fresh start

The Frenchman has already expressed his satisfaction with the move and believes returning to Leipzig was the right choice for his career.

“I’m very happy to be here and I’m convinced I made the right decision. The first week has been fantastic and the team made me feel very welcome.”

Nkunku will now hope his second spell in Germany can help him rediscover the form that made him a standout performer during his first stint at Leipzig, following difficult spells at Chelsea and Milan.
