Mourinho’s leadership and Mbappe’s brilliance are Real Madrid’s biggest threats, says Materazzi

Marco Materazzi says Jose Mourinho’s ability to unite a dressing room remains one of his greatest strengths, while identifying Kylian Mbappe and the Santiago Bernabeu as Real Madrid’s two most dangerous weapons.

The former Italy defender and Inter Milan great was discussing Mourinho’s return to Real Madrid, as well as the similarities he sees between Cristian Chivu’s current Inter side and the team that won the historic treble under the Portuguese manager in 2010.

Materazzi said Chivu reminded him of Mourinho because both coaches provide their players with the same sense of confidence when matches reach decisive moments.

“There is no need to panic, you just have to make the right changes,” Materazzi told La Gazzetta dello Sport while comparing the personalities of the two managers.

The 2006 World Cup winner said he was not surprised by Mourinho’s return to the Bernabeu. He believes the relationship between Mourinho and Real Madrid president Florentino Perez was central to the decision to bring the Portuguese back to the club.

“I know the relationship he has with Florentino, and the great trust he places in Jose. He brought him back to lead Real Madrid,” Materazzi said, according to Marca.

Materazzi expects Mourinho to continue performing the role in which he excels: taking responsibility for everything and becoming the team’s sole leader.

The former centre-back also highlighted Mourinho’s unique connection with the players who work under him.

“The best thing about Jose is that everyone who plays under him feels like they are part of his team, and gives everything for him on the pitch,” he said.

Materazzi believes that bond explains a significant part of Mourinho’s success. He recalled the intensity of their relationship during Inter’s most successful period and summed up the commitment Mourinho can inspire in his players.

“On the pitch, you are ready to sacrifice your life for him,” he added.

The former defender was also asked about the possibility of tension inside the Real Madrid dressing room, including reports of a strained relationship between Aurelien Tchouameni and Federico Valverde.

Materazzi believes Mourinho would be capable of managing the situation and bringing the two midfielders closer together.

“Jose is capable of bringing them together, and they will become close friends,” he said.

Ahead of the expected meeting between Real Madrid and Inter Milan, Materazzi said the contest could be decided in midfield. However, he warned that two factors make Real Madrid a threat to any opponent.

“I say it frankly because it is the truth: Mbappe, and the Santiago Bernabeu,” Materazzi said.

His assessment is based on years of working with Mourinho and understanding how the manager operates. When Mourinho feels supported and has a squad designed specifically to meet his requirements, Materazzi believes he can turn almost any challenge into a winning battle.

Materazzi also reflected on one of the most emotional moments of Mourinho’s time at Inter Milan: his departure after winning the treble in 2010.

He remembered embracing Mourinho at the Santiago Bernabeu after Inter defeated Bayern Munich in the Champions League final. Materazzi admitted that the moment remains an especially treasured memory.

Asked about what the two men said to each other during that meeting, Materazzi replied: “What we said to each other, apart from the phrase ‘fuck you, you’re leaving us with Benitez’, will remain a secret between us forever.”
