Modric to continue Croatia career, confirms Bilic

Slaven Bilic has confirmed that Luka Modric will continue playing international football for Croatia, ending speculation that the midfielder could retire from the national team after their 2026 World Cup campaign.

Modric, who plays for Milan, had been linked with a possible end to his international career following Croatia’s elimination by Portugal at the 2026 World Cup. However, Bilic said the 40-year-old had decided to remain available for his country.

“Of course, Luka’s decision makes me extremely happy, as we are all aware of what he gives Croatia, both on and off the pitch,” Bilic said in comments published by the Croatian Football Federation.

Bilic added that he was looking forward to working with Modric again after 14 years and said they shared a clear ambition to maintain Croatia’s status as a successful and outstanding international side.

“I am looking forward to working with him again after 14 years, and to sharing a strong ambition to preserve Croatia’s position as a successful and distinguished team that competes with the best national sides in the world,” he said.

Croatia are preparing for four Nations League matches against the Czech Republic, England and Spain in September and October. The fixtures are to be played home and away.

The national team is entering a new era following the departure of Zlatko Dalic, who guided Croatia to the silver medal at the 2018 World Cup and a bronze medal at the 2022 tournament.

Modric remains Croatia’s most-capped player, having represented his country 202 times. He has scored 29 goals during that international career.

The midfielder recently extended his contract with Milan for an additional season, allowing him to continue his career at club level as well as with Croatia.

His decision to stay with the national team means Croatia will retain the experience and leadership of one of the most important players in the country’s history as it moves into its next phase. Bilic’s comments also underline the significance of Modric’s contribution beyond his performances on the pitch, with the midfielder continuing to play a central role in the national team’s ambitions.

Croatia’s forthcoming Nations League programme will therefore begin with Modric still part of the squad, despite the uncertainty surrounding his international future after the 2026 World Cup.
