Henry urges Liverpool to build Barcola’s game around pace and one-on-ones

Thierry Henry has told Liverpool that giving Bradley Barcola the freedom to exploit his speed and dribbling ability will be crucial if the club are to get the best from their new France international.

Liverpool invested €145m to sign Barcola, who has agreed a contract running until 2031 and has become the second-most expensive signing in the English club’s history.

Speaking to Sky Sports in comments reported by French outlet Foot Mercato, Henry said Liverpool must create the right conditions for Barcola to display the qualities that have made him one of France’s most highly regarded attacking players.

“With Barcola, the key is knowing how to use him. Can you create one-on-one situations for him? And can you also involve him in counter-attacks? Because he has incredible speed,” Henry said.

The former France forward also warned Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola against asking Barcola to spend too much of his time on defensive duties, arguing that doing so could reduce his attacking influence.

“Should he defend more than he attacks? That could be counterproductive for him,” Henry added.

Henry believes Barcola has the ability to make a major impact in the English league, particularly if he is given space to accelerate during attacking transitions and is regularly placed in direct battles with defenders.

The 28-year-old’s pace and ability to beat opponents in one-on-one situations are viewed by Henry as the central elements of his game. Liverpool, he suggested, should structure their attacking approach to ensure those strengths are used as often as possible rather than restricting the forward with responsibilities that could take him away from dangerous positions.

However, Henry identified one important area where Barcola still needs to improve if he is to reach an even higher level: his finishing.

“I think Barcola needs to improve his ability to finish attacks. If he manages to do that, a lot of teams will find him difficult to stop,” Henry said.

Barcola’s arrival represents a significant financial commitment from Liverpool, with the €145m fee making him the club’s second-most expensive signing. His long-term contract, which runs through 2031, underlines the expectation that he will become an important figure for the team over the coming seasons.

Jamie Carragher, who was also present in the studio, praised Barcola’s ability to bring something distinctive to the English league. The former Liverpool defender also raised questions about the overall balance of the Liverpool squad, suggesting that the French forward’s individual qualities must fit within a coherent team structure.

Henry’s comments focused on maximising Barcola’s attacking threat: isolating him against defenders, giving him room to run and using him in counter-attacking situations. At the same time, the former France star believes the player’s progress in front of goal will determine whether he can turn those opportunities into the level of output expected from such an expensive signing.
